The Wildly Important Goal
“Ron, I am now working on removing all the distractions to focus on business growth,” said the CEO of a Leading Real Estate Company. Grabbing the coaching moment, I simply asked, “How much time would it take to do exactly that?” 45 days was his quick reply. My next question was, “What if you take the same 45 days and focus on one BIG Goal? What would you accomplish?” He replied, “Revenues in excess of 40 Million!”
I probed a bit further. “What difference would it make for you and your company if you do accomplish that goal?” “Plenty… sufficient corpus to kick start another project that will take our company to the next level.” I said, “Bingo! Let’s spend 80% of our time on that ONE BIG GOAL and 20% of our time removing all the distractions”. What you focus on expands.
We helped the teams break their limiting beliefs and showed them that it is indeed possible to accomplish that Wildly Important Goal (WIG) in just 45 days. There is now a huge commitment and a great sense of excitement within the company.
We are now working on a clear-cut roadmap to accomplish that Wildly Important Goal (WIG). This roadmap will be the blueprint where the WIG is further cascaded into clear-cut milestones, critical priorities and actions that the teams need to implement to achieve that WIG. We then demonstrated to the team the importance of putting in the right systems & structure to build a culture of high performance. They were also made aware of the key performance indicators they need to track on a daily basis to accomplish that goal. Aligning the entire organization ‘from the CEO to the front line’ on that one Wildly Important Goal is the next critical step.
